Buyer Questions

Everything You Need to Know Before You Bid

We've answered the most common questions from new and returning buyers below. For anything else, our team is always happy to help.

  • Do I need to register before I can bid?
Yes. All bidders must register before participating in any auction — live or online. Registration is free and can be completed on the Western Cape Auctions Online platform at westerncapeauctionsonline.co.za. You will need a valid South African ID or passport, proof of address, and banking details.
  • How do bidding increments work?
Bidding increments are set by the auctioneer based on the current bid level and the asset category. As the bid price increases, increments typically increase proportionally. The auctioneer has discretion to accept or reject bids that do not meet the current increment.
  • What is the buyer's premium?
A buyer's premium is charged on the hammer price of each lot. The applicable rate is stated in the auction terms and conditions for each specific sale. Please review the conditions of sale before bidding to ensure you understand the total cost of purchase.
  • How do I pay after winning a lot?
Payment is due promptly after the auction closes. Accepted payment methods include EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) and, where applicable, cash. Card payments may be accepted at certain venues. Full payment terms are set out in each auction's conditions of sale.
  • When and how do I collect my purchases?
Collection arrangements and timelines vary per auction and are stated in the conditions of sale. Buyers are responsible for the removal of lots within the specified collection window. Failure to collect within the stated period may result in storage fees or forfeiture.
  • Can I bid online if I cannot attend in person?
Yes. All of our major auctions offer live online bidding via the Western Cape Auctions Online platform. You can register, watch the live stream, and submit bids in real time from anywhere in South Africa — or internationally.
  • What happens if my bid is the highest but the reserve is not met?
Some lots carry a reserve price set by the seller. If the highest bid does not reach the reserve, the lot may not be sold. In some cases the auctioneer may negotiate post-auction between the highest bidder and the seller. Any reserve arrangements are disclosed in the conditions of sale.
