SELLER FAQ
Common Questions From Sellers
Everything you need to know before you commit — answered clearly and honestly by our experienced team.
How is the auctioneer's commission structured?
Commission is charged to the seller as a percentage of the final hammer price and is agreed upfront in the mandate agreement. There are no hidden fees. The buyer's premium, if applicable, is disclosed separately to buyers before bidding commences.
How long does the process take from mandate to auction day?
Typically three to six weeks from signing the mandate to auction day, depending on the asset type and the complexity of the marketing campaign. Property auctions may require slightly longer for legal compliance. We will agree on a realistic timeline during your consultation.
Who pays for the marketing and advertising?
Marketing costs are discussed and agreed during the mandate process. For most asset categories, marketing costs are covered within the commission structure or shared transparently. This is clearly outlined in your mandate agreement before any costs are incurred.
What is a reserve price and how is it set?
A reserve price is the minimum price at which you are willing to sell. It is set collaboratively between you and our auctioneer based on the free valuation, current market conditions, and your financial objectives. The reserve is kept confidential from bidders.
What happens if my asset does not reach the reserve price?
If bidding does not reach the reserve, the asset is passed in and no sale is concluded. We will immediately discuss options with you — including negotiating with the highest bidder post-auction, adjusting the reserve, or scheduling a further auction. You are never obligated to accept a below-reserve offer.
Is the legal and transfer process handled by Western Cape Auctioneers?
We work closely with a panel of experienced attorneys and conveyancers for property transactions, and we manage all post-auction administration for asset sales. Our team guides you through every step and ensures compliance with all relevant South African legislation.
Can I sell assets from any province, or only in the Western Cape?
Western Cape Auctioneers operates nationally across South Africa. While we are headquartered in the Western Cape, we have the network, buyer database and team to manage auctions for assets located anywhere in the country.
